Skin care doesn’t have to be so hard. Have you ever wondered where the problem was? The reason is that when we use some random product recommended by someone or purchased from the local drug store, and after using it for an extended period of time, there is no change in our skin; it appears more dull than ever before.
The real problem here is not having a proper regimen. Skin care isn’t about spending hundreds of dollars or a 10-step regimen. The key to successful skincare is applying the right products in the right sequence on a daily basis.
Honestly, by the end of this page, you’ll know exactly what to do with your skin before you go to bed tonight. No stress, just the basics. No overdrive, no confusion. Just clear skin, one step at a time.
Why Your Skin Actually Needs a Routine
Did you know? Your skin renews itself in just 27 days. But it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need care just because it can repair itself.
We forget that our skin is a shield against all the dust, germs, and sun outside. If we don’t clean and protect it, it just can’t do its job.
You brush your teeth daily, not once a month. Because you know brushing once a month won’t give you the perfect white and strong teeth. Your skin needs the same care as you give to your teeth.
Earlier, I used to wash my face with random soaps or face washes that I found in my bathroom. And of course! It doesn’t make my skin glow. I ended up losing all my skin radiance. From that day, I learnt the importance of a proper skincare routine.
Giving your skin just five minutes a day right now is going to save you so much money later. It’s way better to keep your skin healthy today than to spend a ton of cash trying to fix dark spots and fine lines in the future.
If you still think that skincare is expensive, then you need to read this article. I break down everything that seems complicated to you, and I promise that at the end, you will never look at your skin the same way again.
Step 0 — Find Your Skin Type First (Takes 2 Minutes)
It’s crazy how people throw money at expensive skincare and then sit there wondering why it isn’t working for them. Okay, ask yourself— Do I know my skin type? If your answer is ‘No ’—sadly, you just wasted your money, and you are doing your skincare wrong the whole time.
Here’s a super-easy way to figure out your skin type at home tonight. All you need to do is:
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
- Pat dry with a towel and leave it bare for 20 to 25 minutes.
- Observe what your skin feels like:
- Oily: Very shiny, mostly on the T-zone region right after washing your face.
- Dry: Tight, rough, and sometimes flaky skin, particularly near the nose and cheeks.
- Combination: Skin is oily only in the T-zone region, while other parts can be either dry or normal.
- Normal: Balanced skin without any shine and without tightness.
- Sensitive: Skin tends to react and become red or sting.
Found your skin type? Perfect. Let’s look at what your daily skincare routine should look like from here on out.
The 5-Step Skincare Routine (In the Right Order)
Every person has the right products in their vanity, but they are confused about the sequence of product application. If you put your moisturizer before serum, congratulations, neither of them will work properly.
Don’t worry, this section fixes everything, but before diving into the steps, remember this golden rule: always apply the thinnest products first and the thickest products last.
Step 1 — Cleanser (The Step You Should Never Skip)
If you are someone like me who is using a soap bar on your face to clean it, stop it immediately. It is doing nothing but disrupting your skin’s pH balance.
Cleansing not only removes dirt, oil, and pollution, but it also prepares the skin to receive everything that comes next.
Always massage the cleanser for 30 to 60 seconds on your face, not 5 seconds like most people do. It helps to break down the ingredients and make the cleansing even smoother. Instead of just using cold water, wash with lukewarm water as it helps to remove oil and dirt and cleanses the face even more properly.
Pat dry the skin — don’t rub. Rubbing your face too hard can mess with your skin and make it super red.
And now the question is — How often should you cleanse? I recommend twice a day, morning and night. Morning cleansing helps remove oil and sweat produced overnight, and night cleansing removes dirt and pollution collected on the skin during the daytime. Here is some advice that you should listen to: never cleanse more than twice a day because it strips the natural oil from the skin.
Okay, now let’s talk about choosing the correct cleanser according to your skin type. People with oily skin can use a foaming or gel cleanser. For dry skin, go with a cream or milk cleanser. Combination skin goes well with a gentle gel. Fragrance-free and soap-free cleansers are best for sensitive or irritated skin. Make sure that your cleanser does not contain sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate.
Step 2 — Toner (The Most Misunderstood Step)
Earlier, whenever I watched any skincare routine video, I skipped the toner part because I thought that it was an unnecessary step. But then I got to know about toner. It is essential to maintain the skin’s pH balance, which was slightly disrupted during cleansing. I gave the toner another name, called the reset button. It finally prepares the skin for further steps.
Thank god we weren’t born in the 90s; otherwise, we would have had to use those alcohol loaded toners that make the skin dry and raw. The modern world toners are completely different; they are hydrating and soothing.
If your toner smells nice — Don’t be Happy. Fragrance can irritate your skin. Most people don’t know how to use the toner in the correct way. Let me teach you — don’t put the toner on a cotton pad if possible, as it absorbs a lot of product. Instead, put a small amount on the palm and press gently on the skin. Do not rub or wipe. Now you are thinking about what pressing the toner can do. Pressing allows ingredients to sit in the skin more perfectly than rubbing.
In case of oily skin, you need to use toners containing either niacinamide or salicylic acid. Dry skin will work better with hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Combination skin requires rose water or niacinamide. And for sensitive skin, you should definitely opt for a fragrance- and alcohol-free toner, like rose water.
Do you want to skip toner? You can, but only if your skin feels balanced right after cleansing.
Finally, toning prepares your skin for the next step, which is — read Step 3.
Step 3 — Serum (Optional But Powerful)
If your skin is oily and you’re about to skip this part – don’t. Skipping the moisturizer is the number-one cause for oily skin to get even worse. Think of moisturizer as the lid on the jar. It seals everything underneath it.
Oily skin seems hydrates but it produces more oil when it does not receive moisture. A lightweight oil-free moisturizer is a must for oily skin to give it a little moisture without making it oily.
I bet that most of you apply moisturizer when your skin is completely dry. But it should always be applied to damp skin. Slightly damp skin absorbs moisture more efficiently than dry skin. The application method is the same – pat it gently, don’t rub or drag.
A gel-based product is ideal for those with oily skin. For dry skin, one should opt for a heavier cream that contains either ceramides or shea butter. Gel-creams work well for combination skin types. Fragrance-free and alcohol-free products containing a minimal number of ingredients are recommended for sensitive skin. And for those with normal skin, all that one needs is a light lotion containing hyaluronic acid.
If you remember, I told you to always look at the ingredient list, and the product should not contain any type of harsh chemicals. Hyaluronic acid, which is helpful for hydration, ceramides that can help repair your skin barrier, glycerin for making your skin soft, and even squalane in case you would like a lighter moisturizer.
A moisturizer is a must in both morning and night routines. Never skip it.
Step 4 — Moisturizer (For Every Single Skin Type)
At any point in life, you have definitely been confused about choosing serums that perfectly suit your skin. Here is the truth — all you need is one serum that is made to cure your skin concern.
Serum is a thin and very concentrated formulation that consists of small molecules in comparison to a moisturizer. This is why a serum penetrates deep into the skin, delivering active substances precisely where they are required. The moisturizer is applied to the skin, forming a layer. The serum works beneath this layer.
But let’s be honest — serum is not mandatory for everyone. If you do not have any skin concerns and your goal is to only achieve healthy skin, then a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen are enough. Serums can be used when you have a specific skin concern, like dark spots, open pores, pigmentation, etc.
So which one would you choose? If discolouration and uneven skin tones are your biggest problems, then a Vitamin C serum will help brighten up and fade out the pigment over time. If you have dehydrated skin or a rough texture, then hyaluronic acid serum helps to retain moisture and plump up the skin from the inside out. If you have oily skin or enlarged pores, then niacinamide is for you because it helps to regulate the oil levels and minimise pores. Centella asiatica works best if redness or sensitive skin is your problem, since it soothes and repairs without being aggressive.
Are you using serum in the correct way? Let’s check. You use it the right way if you take a few drops and rub them between your fingers, pressing gently on the skin. Make sure you wait for 30 to 60 seconds before layering moisturizer.
If you are using too many serums at once, stop it right away. Too many ingredients at once can cause irritation and redness and may burn your skin. Choose one serum and apply it consistently for better results.
Serum only works if you seal it with moisturiser. So let’s talk about it in Step 4.
Step 5 — Sunscreen (Morning Only — Non-Negotiable)
I think I don’t need to tell you that it is the most important step. If you are told to use a product for the rest of your life, it should be the one.
UV rays are the cause of as much as 80% of visible skin aging – from discoloration, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, to dullness. And it all happens quietly day after day, no matter how warm you feel from the sun’s heat. Each time you go out without sunscreen, you undo your skincare routine.
Should you look for the SPF number when you buy any sunscreen? Definitely. SPF plays an important role. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks about 98%. According to this data, it’s better to choose sunscreen with SPF 50.
How you apply sunscreen is also very important. Always take sunscreen oin2 finger lengths and spread all over the face. Again, don’t rub it, just press it onto the skin.
I heard a myth that says – if you apply sunscreen, you will become vitamin D-deficient. This is not true with brief incidental exposure and a balanced diet with proper vitamin D.
I am sure that all the steps are clear to you, and now let’s move on to the next section, in which we will discuss how long it takes to see the results.
When Will You Actually See Results?
The biggest mistake people make is that they quit their skincare routine just before it starts working. You have to be patient because it’s not like cooking a dish that takes 10 minutes to cook. But it also does not take a long time to achieve your dream skin.
Listen, as I already told you, our skin renews itself every 27 days. The fresh skin you will see after 27 days can be achieved with the products in the first week. Within the first couple of weeks, you will find yourself having smoother and healthier-looking skin due to increased hydration. In the third and fourth weeks, you should be able to see visible changes like a more radiant look, a decrease in dullness, and smaller pores. After the second or third month, the spots may begin fading away, and the skin texture will improve, resulting in glowing skin. Patience is the most important thing in this whole process since many people lose hope way before seeing any results.
A simple routine that is performed every day beats the most expensive skincare routine done occasionally. Just take a picture of your bare skin and check it out every month, for a mirror can be a liar, but a photograph is not.
Start Tonight, Not Monday
You definitely have heard that discipline is better than motivation. Yeah, that’s true. Maybe you got motivated after reading this long article, and you’re now probably thinking of starting a routine. Some people plan to start tomorrow, maybe the day after tomorrow, or maybe Monday.
To wait for Monday is to wait for an ideal condition that will never be realized. The most productive skincare routine is not that which begins with a fresh page, but that which begins right where you are at this very moment.
Washing your face before sleeping and applying moisturizer will take up tonight’s skincare routine. It will only require two steps and two minutes to complete. Tomorrow morning, it will simply be applying sunscreen before you step out of the house. Nothing more than that. All the other products can be added later.
Skincare is not about having perfect skin. It is about choosing your skin every single day.
